The night the internets caught fire…
So tonight, I happened to notice through a twitter friend that the internets were on fire. All because someone cracked the HD-DVD copy protection scheme. Cool, whatever.
But over on Digg (who I won’t bother linking too, cause it appears they suck and have a poor understanding of IP law anyway) they are censoring posts that reflect this cracked code. So why am I posting on my blog after all this time of idyll and silence?
BecauseĀ the government , outside of the voting booth, (as it stands now) doesn’t really want a place where people can directly participate in “democracy” in any sense. They want it to be controlled participation.
I think it won’t be too long until they pull the plug on the whole internets, and roll out a “newer, better, faster” system with tight content controls. Because if what is happening on Digg is any indication, as soon as something truly “damaging” gets into the wild - boom. Down goes the hammer of censorship.
edit: someone asked me why I say “internets” instead of “the internet” or “world wide web” etc. Well, It’s because the president used it in one of his (state of the union?) speeches a few years ago. It’s an homage.
